Walking Festival

We had a fabulous weekend as part of the YHA (England & Wales) Festival of Walking in the Lake District. We enjoyed the outdoors together, walking in the Lake District and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the National Park. The weather was kind to us!!!

Our countryside and landscapes are for everyone – yet there are still far too many barriers (racism) preventing people from ethnically diverse communities from accessing them. Nature should be accessible to everyone and not just a few.

Volunteering

A small group of ethnically diverse people came together for a taster volunteer weekend at Rookhow, near Coniston, to experience volunteering in the landscapes.

With the @friendsoflakes Lakes, at their Rusland Woods site, we undertook a hands-on conservation activity cutting Holly regeneration near the bases of trees so the Bryophytes and Lichens can spread and carried out some surveying. On Sunday, we spent the morning with #FixtheFells (@ntlakedistrict ), with a walk and talk around Beacon Tarn and Fell and an opportunity to understand and discuss some of the issues that FtF has to deal with, such as footpaths and erosion.

The group spent Saturday evening over dinner with several landscape organisations, discussing various volunteer opportunities available in the landscapes.

Sitting here at the Golden Gate Park, taking time to reflect on my learning around BAME engagement in the outdoors. “From Local to National Park’s and related Organisations (private, public and voluntary) all have a role to play. The need for stewardship and belonging in those spaces, which are predominantly” white spaces”, is an area of work that needs to include diverse BAME communities. We all need to have those conversations to actively and sustainably engage BAME communities in the outdoors, the Outdoors are for ALL.”

This amazing opportunity as a #churchillfellow2019 is a time to reflect and inspire for the future on my return.

Buffalo Soldiers

It was an honour to be awarded the @wcmtuk Fellowship 2019, and the opportunity this has provided me to learn about BAME (People of Colour), enggament in the Outdoors, in Canada, US and Ireland. About 15 years ago I came across an article about the Buffalo Soldiers and Yosemite. Last week as part of my fellowship, I was fortunate to spend time in probably one of the most beautiful National Parks, Yosemite, never thought I would have the opportunity to visit. I was privileged to start my visit to Yosemite National Park, with a visit to Parsons Memorial Lodge at Tuolumne Meadows, to watch a powerful performance of “Buffalo Soldier”. Having read about “Buffalo Soldier” over 15 years ago. It was powerful but engaging and challenging, Park Ranger Shelton Johnson portrays one of the U.S. Army’s Buffalo Soldiers as part of his interpretation of Yosemite’s history back in 1899, and their experiences as some of the first African American park protectors. Amazing history about the Yosemite. It was a great opportunity to see the powerful performance by @yosemite_shelton .
